Christmas in Vienna: What’s Open & Closed on December 24–26?

Planning to spend Christmas in Vienna? Before you book your trip, there is one important thing to understand: Vienna does not completely shut down for Christmas, but the city operates very differently on December 24, 25 and 26. I have personally visited Vienna during this period, so this guide is based not only on official opening information but also on my own experience of how the city feels and functions during Christmas. The biggest mistake would be assuming that Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and December 26 are all the same. They aren’t.

December 24 is the day when you need to be most careful with your planning. December 25 and 26 are actually much easier for sightseeing than you might expect.

Here is what you should know before planning your Christmas trip to Vienna.

December 24: The Day Vienna Starts Closing Down

If you are arriving in Vienna on Christmas Eve, do your sightseeing early in the day.

December 24 is when you will notice the biggest change in the city’s usual rhythm. Many attractions operate with reduced opening hours, shops close earlier, and Christmas markets that remain open generally finish much earlier than on ordinary days.

This doesn’t mean you have nothing to do. Quite the opposite – you can still have a beautiful day in Vienna. You simply need to accept that your options become increasingly limited as the afternoon progresses.

For example, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is currently scheduled to open from 10:00 to 15:00 on December 24, 2026, before returning to 10:00–18:00 on December 25 and 26.

The Albertina also normally operates daily, but its Christmas Eve schedule should always be checked before your visit because holiday hours can differ from regular opening times.

My advice for December 24

Plan your most important museum or attraction for the morning.

Then use the afternoon for:

  • Walking through central Vienna
  • Visiting Christmas markets that remain open
  • Seeing the Christmas decorations around the city
  • Having an early dinner
  • Enjoying the atmosphere around Stephansplatz and the historic center

Don’t leave your most important sightseeing for 4 or 5 PM and expect everything to be operating normally.

December 25: Is Vienna Closed on Christmas Day?

No and this is one of the things that surprised me. Vienna is not completely shut down on Christmas Day. Some museums and attractions remain open, although you should expect a quieter city and fewer options than on a normal day.

For example, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is currently scheduled to open from 10:00 to 18:00 on December 25 and 26, 2026, despite its reduced schedule on Christmas Eve. This means Christmas Day can actually be a very good day for sightseeing if you plan ahead.

The atmosphere is different, though. Some businesses close completely, others operate with shorter hours, and restaurants that do open can be particularly busy.

My Advice for December 25

I would not recommend arriving in Vienna on December 25 with no plan at all and simply deciding where to go once you wake up.

My advices for this day:

  • Use December 25 as a slower sightseeing day.
  • Choose museums and attractions that are confirmed to be open, and leave some time to enjoy Vienna’s quieter Christmas atmosphere.
  • Make sure to book your restaurant in advance, as many places are closed or operate with limited hours on Christmas Day.

December 26: Much Easier for Sightseeing

December 26 is St. Stephen’s Day, a public holiday in Austria, but this doesn’t mean that Vienna shuts down. In fact, from a tourist’s perspective, it can be a surprisingly convenient sightseeing day.

Major museums can be open with their regular or holiday schedules. The city also starts feeling more like a normal tourist destination again compared with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

If you have three days in Vienna, December 24, 25 and 26, I would actually save some of your major sightseeing for December 25 and 26, rather than trying to fit everything into Christmas Eve.

My Advice for December 26

December 26 is probably the easiest of the three Christmas days for sightseeing, so I would use it to fit in as many of your planned attractions as possible. Although it is still a public holiday in Austria, so:

  • Don’t assume everything is back to normal just because Christmas Day has passed – December 26 is still a public holiday in Austria, so some businesses may have reduced hours.
  • Check holiday opening hours before visiting, as some attractions may still operate on a special schedule.
  • Use the day for your most important museums and attractions if you have limited time in Vienna.
  • Visit a Christmas market – several major markets remain open on December 26.
  • Book lunch or dinner in advance, especially if you have a specific restaurant in mind.
  • Take advantage of the quieter atmosphere and explore Vienna’s historic center between attractions.

What Happens to Vienna’s Christmas Markets?

Not all Vienna Christmas markets close before Christmas. Some of the smaller and more traditional markets finish around December 23, but several of the major Christmas markets continue through December 24–26.

Rathausplatz Christmas Market

The famous Viennese Christmas Market at Rathausplatz runs until December 26. On December 24, it has reduced hours of 10:00–18:30, while its regular schedule is 10:00–22:00.

Schönbrunn Christmas Market

The Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace also continues well beyond Christmas. For 2026, it runs until January 6, with reduced hours on December 24 (10:00–16:00) and 10:00–19:00 from December 25 onward.

Stephansplatz Christmas Market

The Christmas market at Stephansplatz also remains open through December 26. On December 24, it operates from 11:00–16:00, while on December 25 and 26 it is scheduled to run from 11:00–19:00.

But many smaller markets DO close before Christmas

This is the important distinction. Markets such as Freyung, Am Hof, Karlsplatz and Spittelberg are scheduled to finish on December 23 for the 2026 season. So don’t assume that every Christmas market you see recommended in Vienna will still be operating after December 23.

If Christmas markets are the main reason you’re visiting Vienna, check the closing date of each individual market.

What About Restaurants on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

This is probably the part you should plan most carefully. You can find restaurants open during Christmas, but you should not expect the same choice you would have on an ordinary day.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are family holidays, so many independent restaurants close or operate under special holiday schedules. The restaurants that do open can therefore become much more popular.

Do you need to reserve a restaurant? I strongly recommend it. Especially for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Don’t rely on walking around Vienna at 7 PM on Christmas Day and expecting to find several restaurants with available tables. Instead, choose your restaurant in advance and check its Christmas opening hours.

Some restaurants may also offer a special Christmas menu, which means the experience and price can be different from their normal service. This is one area where a little planning can save you a lot of frustration.

What About Cafes?

Cafes are generally easier to find than restaurants, but again, Christmas opening hours vary. Vienna’s famous cafe culture doesn’t completely disappear during Christmas, but you shouldn’t assume that your favorite cafe will be open simply because it normally operates every day.

If there is a particular cafe you want to visit, check its holiday schedule beforehand. And if you’re planning a full day of sightseeing, don’t leave food completely unplanned.

What Can You Do in Vienna When Attractions Are Closed?

This is actually where Vienna works surprisingly well. Even if several museums or attractions are closed, you can still have a very enjoyable day simply exploring the city.

You can walk through:

  • Stephansplatz
  • Graben
  • Kohlmarkt
  • Hofburg
  • Ringstrasse
  • Belvedere area
  • Schönbrunn
  • Vienna’s historic center

You can also visit viewpoints, admire the architecture, walk through decorated streets and spend time at one of the Christmas markets that remains open. You don’t have to enter an attraction every hour for Vienna to be worth visiting.

So, Is Vienna Worth Visiting at Christmas?

Absolutely, but Christmas in Vienna requires a different kind of planning.

If you visit expecting every museum, restaurant and market to operate normally on December 24–26, you may be disappointed. But if you understand the rhythm of the holidays, Vienna can be one of the most atmospheric European destinations to visit at Christmas.

My biggest recommendation is simple: Don’t treat December 24, 25 and 26 as identical days. December 24 requires the most planning and should be focused on morning sightseeing. December 25 is quieter but still offers cultural attractions and Christmas markets. December 26 gives you considerably more freedom to return to sightseeing.

And most importantly, book your Christmas meals in advance and check the opening hours of every attraction you consider visiting.

Opening schedules can change from one year to another, so use this article as a planning framework rather than assuming that the 2026 hours will automatically apply to future Christmases. Vienna’s official tourism site and individual attractions publish their holiday schedules, and those are the best sources to check immediately before your trip.
