VIENNA, AUSTRIA
Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, known for its rich cultural heritage, imperial history, and world-famous classical music traditions. Visiting Vienna during the New Year holidays is an unforgettable experience – the city glows with festive lights, charming Christmas and New Year markets, and a warm atmosphere that welcomes travelers from around the world. As the former capital of the Habsburg Empire, Vienna remains a major European cultural center, influencing music, art, architecture, and philosophy for centuries.
The historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to some of Vienna’s top attractions including Schönbrunn Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Belvedere Palace, the Vienna State Opera, and numerous museums and galleries. The combination of imperial palaces, elegant boulevards, traditional coffee houses, and vibrant cultural institutions makes Vienna a perfect destination for both art lovers and casual travelers. Whether you’re admiring iconic Austrian art, attending a classical music concert, or enjoying a Viennese café experience, the city invites you to admire its timeless beauty at every corner.
I visited Vienna in winter, just before New Year’s Eve, and the festive scenery made the whole trip even more memorable. The sparkling decorations, holiday concerts, and cozy winter markets create an atmosphere that feels both romantic and exciting. Vienna is a city full of history, elegance, and life. If you’re planning a European winter trip, Vienna is a destination that won’t leave you indifferent. Its blend of history, art, and winter magic makes it a city worth returning to, time and time again.

Destinations for Our Next Vienna Trip
Vienna is a destination we plan to return to, hoping to see it in a different season, as I am sure it has the power to enchant us all over again. For our next visit, we’ve saved the Lower Belvedere Palace and Belvedere 21, as well as Schönbrunn Zoo, Karlskirche and classical music concert, Prater Park & Wiener Riesenrad, Donauturm, Kunst Haus Wien, Zentralfriedhof and Leopold Museum. Also, it’s a big wish of mine to visit the Sommernachtskonzert Schönbrunn (Summer Night Concert), which takes place once a year, usually in late May or early June, and is free for all visitors.

FOOD
“This capital, known for its long tradition of pastry-making, truly celebrates dessert culture. You’ll find famous cakes and sweets on almost every corner – so don’t miss the chance to try. Restaurants are often very busy, and it’s common to wait in line to get a table, so I recommend making reservations in advance. Also, keep in mind that lunch prices are among the higher ones in Europe, so plan a budget of around €50 for a meal for two. If you have the opportunity, I suggest exploring Michelin-starred restaurants – for roughly the same price, you can enjoy exceptional, high-quality cuisine as we did in Ariston Hellenic restaurant.”

RANKING OF LANDMARKS:
RANKING OF ATTRACTIONS:

HOSPITALITY
“Vienna is a city with a highly developed tourism scene, so you will always be able to find answers to any questions you may have, and the local population is generally welcoming, fully aware of how much the city benefits from tourism. What I personally didn’t enjoy, however, was the attitude in some restaurants, where despite spending a considerable amount of money on a meal, the service felt unfriendly. Waiting in line outside while the restaurant is half-empty, being spoken to in a dismissive tone, and sensing a certain arrogance are definitely not commendable.”
⭐⭐⭐☆☆

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
“Public transportation in the city is very well organized and easy to navigate. If you happen to visit during a period when part of the metro is under renovation, you may find it a bit challenging to figure out the updated routes, but overall, the public transit system deserves high praise.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

SAFETY
“As in any large metropolitan city, petty theft can happen, so it’s important to stay aware of your belongings when navigating crowded areas. Because Vienna is busy year-round and attracts people from all over the world, I personally didn’t always feel completely at ease, even though I never experienced anything unpleasant. I’m simply not used to being surrounded by such large crowds or to the city’s fast-paced, highly diverse atmosphere, which made me feel a bit uneasy using public transport late in the evening. If you’re someone who tends to be more cautious or anxious in big cities, I would recommend visiting Vienna with male friends or as a couple, as it can make the experience feel more comfortable and enjoyable.”
