White Tower of Thessaloniki, Greece

White Tower in Thessaloniki

Rising prominently along Thessaloniki’s waterfront, the White Tower is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and a symbol of its rich history. Built in the 15th century by the Ottomans on the site of an earlier Byzantine fortification, the tower has served multiple purposes over the centuries — from a defensive fortress protecting the city, to a prison during Ottoman rule, and now a museum dedicated to Thessaloniki’s past. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits on the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman periods, the Macedonian Struggle, and the tower’s own fascinating architectural evolution.

Inside the White Tower: What to See

Visiting the White Tower in Thessaloniki is like stepping into the city’s layered history. The exhibition was originally created to educate the Greek people about their own past, so the entire concept is both historical and highly informative.

The museum spans six floors, each dedicated to a different chapter of Thessaloniki’s story. On the ground floor, you can explore the city’s origins through visual projections and insights from the ancient geographer Strabo. As you move up, higher floors highlight Thessaloniki’s urban transformations, key monuments, multicultural communities, and spiritual and cultural life.

Across the tower, an interactive historical exhibition engages visitors, and at the very top, as a kind of reward, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city and the Thermaic Gulf — perfect for photos. I recommend visiting around sunset for the best experience, when the city is bathed in golden light.

My White Tower Experience

When I visited, there were a few drawbacks. In August, when it’s very hot, the tower is not air-conditioned, so walking through the exhibition can get uncomfortable, and climbing the stairs can also be tiring. The fans that are installed aren’t sufficient to make the visit entirely pleasant. At the time of my visit, not all the installations were operational, so I missed almost half of them. I’ve also read online that some visitors were disappointed because none of the installations worked during their visit.

Why You Should Visit Thessaloniki’s White Tower

As the city’s most iconic landmark, the White Tower is definitely worth visiting for many reasons beyond its striking exterior along the waterfront.

The White Tower reflects a long and layered history and gives visitors a tangible connection to the city’s past. Walking through its halls, you can imagine the lives of those who were once held here, while exhibits across multiple floors provide insight into Thessaloniki’s evolution, its key monuments, multicultural communities, and cultural traditions. Also, the panoramic view offers a perspective you simply can’t get anywhere else.

Even if some exhibits are temporarily closed, the combination of history, architecture, culture, and stunning views makes the White Tower an essential stop for anyone exploring Thessaloniki.

Interactivity and Guides

The audio guide of the exhibition is well-designed, and in English, it provides all the essential information. Bring headphones and a fully charged phone so you can connect. You can even access the audio guide later if you keep the link provided at the entrance. The labels next to the exhibits don’t offer much, as most of the text is in Greek. However, the exhibition is designed to be multimedia and interactive, so when all installations are working, you’ll get to enjoy that engaging side of the museum as well.
