The museum spans six floors, each dedicated to a different chapter of Thessaloniki’s story. On the ground floor, you can explore the city’s origins through visual projections and insights from the ancient geographer Strabo. As you move up, higher floors highlight Thessaloniki’s urban transformations, key monuments, multicultural communities, and spiritual and cultural life.

Across the tower, an interactive historical exhibition engages visitors, and at the very top, as a kind of reward, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city and the Thermaic Gulf — perfect for photos. I recommend visiting around sunset for the best experience, when the city is bathed in golden light.

My White Tower Experience

When I visited, there were a few drawbacks. In August, when it’s very hot, the tower is not air-conditioned, so walking through the exhibition can get uncomfortable, and climbing the stairs can also be tiring. The fans that are installed aren’t sufficient to make the visit entirely pleasant. At the time of my visit, not all the installations were operational, so I missed almost half of them. I’ve also read online that some visitors were disappointed because none of the installations worked during their visit.

The audio guide of the exhibition is well-designed, and in English, it provides all the essential information. Bring headphones and a fully charged phone so you can connect. You can even access the audio guide later if you keep the link provided at the entrance. The labels next to the exhibits don’t offer much, as most of the text is in Greek. However, the exhibition is designed to be multimedia and interactive, so when all installations are working, you’ll get to enjoy that engaging side of the museum as well.
