The Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) is one of Lisbon’s most recognizable landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands proudly on the banks of the Tagus River. Built in the early 16th century, during the height of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries, it once served as a fortress and ceremonial gateway to the city. Today, it’s one of the top three most visited attractions in Lisbon, admired for its Manueline architecture — a uniquely Portuguese style rich with maritime motifs. When I visited, the crowds were enormous, so I decided not to go inside. Instead, I enjoyed photographing the tower from the outside and relaxing in the nearby park overlooking the river and the monument.

Inside the Belém Tower: What to See

The Belém Tower is a masterpiece of late Gothic and Manueline design, featuring intricate stone carvings, turrets, and rope-like details symbolizing Portugal’s seafaring past. Inside, visitors can explore several levels, including the Governor’s Chamber, King’s Hall, and chapel, as well as climb to the top terrace for panoramic views of the river and the Bridge of 25th April. The tower was originally commissioned by King Manuel I in 1515 and designed by architect Francisco de Arruda as part of a defense system protecting Lisbon’s harbor. It also commemorates the voyages of famous explorers who set sail from this very area to discover new worlds.

Why You Should Visit Lisbon’s Belém Tower

Even if you don’t go inside, visiting Belém Tower is a must when exploring Lisbon. Its riverside location, historical significance, and stunning design make it an ideal spot for photos and a peaceful stroll. Personally, I didn’t have any extraordinary impressions – it’s a beautiful landmark, but crowds can be tiring. Still, the surroundings make up for it: the park nearby is perfect for a short break, and the area of Belém itself is filled with other must-see attractions like the Jerónimos Monastery and Monument to the Discoveries. It’s the perfect place to enjoy Lisbon’s maritime charm and take in the view, but if you’re visiting during the hot summer days, make sure to bring water and a hat, as there isn’t much shade while exploring the three main attractions in this area.
