During my time in Thessaloniki, I focused on discovering the city’s rich Roman and Byzantine heritage rather than rushing from one attraction to another. These are the four places that impressed me the most and that I would recommend to anyone visiting Thessaloniki for the first time.
Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
If I had to recommend just one museum in Thessaloniki, it would be the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
Its collection tells the story of ancient Macedonia through beautifully preserved sculptures, jewelry, pottery, mosaics, and everyday objects dating back thousands of years. The exhibitions are well organized, making it easy to understand the history of the region even if you’re not an archaeology enthusiast.
I spent several hours here and never felt overwhelmed. The museum offers just the right balance between detailed historical information and engaging displays, making it enjoyable for both first-time visitors and history lovers.

Rotunda
Although the Rotunda isn’t a traditional museum, I believe it’s one of the most fascinating historical monuments in Thessaloniki and deserves a place on every visitor’s itinerary.
Originally built as a Roman structure in the 4th century, it later became a Christian church and then an Ottoman mosque. Walking inside, you’ll immediately notice the impressive dome and remarkably preserved Byzantine mosaics, which are among the oldest in Europe.
For me, the Rotunda perfectly illustrates Thessaloniki’s unique history, where different civilizations have shaped the city over the centuries.

White Tower
Visit to Thessaloniki isn’t complete without the White Tower, the city’s most recognizable landmark.
Inside, you’ll find a modern museum that presents the history of Thessaloniki through interactive exhibitions spread across several floors. As you make your way to the top, you’ll also enjoy increadibly beautiful views over the city and the Thermaic Gulf.
I especially recommend visiting on a clear day, when the panoramic views make the experience even more memorable.

Museum of Byzantine Culture
The Museum of Byzantine Culture was another highlight of my trip.
Its exhibitions provide an excellent introduction to the Byzantine Empire and explain how Thessaloniki became one of its most important cultural and religious centers. Through icons, frescoes, manuscripts, jewelry, and everyday objects, the museum offers a deeper understanding of Byzantine life and art.

Why These Museums Are Worth Visiting
One thing I appreciated most was how these four attractions complement one another.
The Archaeological Museum introduces ancient Macedonia, the Rotunda connects you with Roman and early Christian history, the White Tower explains the city’s historical development, and the Museum of Byzantine Culture completes the story by showcasing one of the most influential periods in Thessaloniki’s past.

If you only have one or two days in Thessaloniki, these are the museums and historical sites I would prioritize without hesitation.
They helped me understand the city’s remarkable past and made my visit much more meaningful than simply walking through the streets or stopping for photos at the main landmarks.
