Is Milan Worth Visiting? An Honest Travel Guide
Is Milan worth visiting? Absolutely. While Milan may not have the instantly romantic atmosphere of Rome, Florence, or Venice, I believe the city deserves a place on your Italy itinerary, especially if you are interested in art, history, architecture, fashion, design, and good food.
Milan has much more to offer than its famous cathedral and luxury shopping streets. Behind the polished city centre, you’ll find world-class museums, Renaissance masterpieces, historic churches, elegant neighbourhoods, contemporary art, and a very distinctive Italian atmosphere.

But is Milan worth visiting if you only have a few days? And what makes the city different from other Italian destinations?
So, Is Milan Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if you enjoy culture, art, architecture, and cities with a more modern and sophisticated atmosphere.
Milan is often described as Italy’s fashion and business capital, but that description doesn’t tell the whole story. The city has a fascinating history that goes back centuries, and its cultural scene is surprisingly rich. You can see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, explore one of Italy’s most important art collections at the Pinacoteca di Brera, visit the magnificent Duomo, discover modern Italian art, and then spend the evening enjoying an aperitivo in one of Milan’s neighbourhoods.
The city also has a very different character from Italy’s more traditional tourist destinations. It feels energetic, stylish, creative, and distinctly urban. And that is precisely what I like about Milan.
Incredible Art and Museum Scene
For me, one of the biggest reasons to visit Milan is its cultural scene. The city is home to an impressive range of museums and galleries, covering everything from Renaissance art to contemporary design and modern Italian culture. Milan’s official tourism organisation highlights museums such as the Pinacoteca di Brera, Museo del Novecento, Fondazione Prada, HangarBicocca, and the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology.
If museums are one of your main reasons for travelling, don’t miss my Best Museums in Milan guide, where I highlight the museums I think deserve a place on your itinerary.
Don’t Stop at Duomo
Of course, we have to talk about the Duomo di Milano. It is one of those landmarks that really does live up to the photographs. The enormous Gothic cathedral dominates the centre of Milan, with its marble facade, countless spires, statues, and the famous golden Madonnina at the top. The cathedral’s construction began in 1386 and continued for centuries.
But my biggest recommendation is not to simply admire the Duomo from Piazza del Duomo. Go up to the terraces.
Walking among the cathedral’s spires gives you a completely different perspective of Milan and is one of the city’s most memorable experiences. And once you’re back at street level, you’re surrounded by some of Milan’s most famous landmarks: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Teatro alla Scala, Museo del Novecento, Palazzo Reale, and the city’s elegant shopping streets.

Conclusion – What I Like About Milan
The city has much more to offer than its reputation as Italy’s fashion and business capital suggests. For me, the biggest reasons to visit are its art and museums, extraordinary architecture, the Duomo and its terraces, Brera, food, and unmistakable Milanese atmosphere.
What I particularly appreciate is the combination of old and new. Milan can give you Renaissance art, historic churches, Gothic architecture, contemporary exhibitions, fashion, design, and modern city life, often within the same day. So, if you’re considering adding Milan to your Italy itinerary, I would absolutely include it.
It may not be the first Italian city that comes to everyone’s mind, but it has plenty to offer and I think it deserves more than a quick stop just to see the Duomo.
Milan is a city worth taking the time to discover.
