Sforza Castle in Milan

Located at the heart of Milan, Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) is one of the city’s most important historical landmarks and a must-see attraction for anyone interested in Italian history, Renaissance art, and architecture. Originally built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, this massive fortress once served as a royal residence, military stronghold, and cultural center. Today, it stands as a vast museum complex and public space, connecting the city center with the beautiful Parco Sempione behind it. Visiting Sforza Castle feels like stepping into a living piece of Milan’s past, where every wall holds a story.

Inside the Sforza Castle: What to See

Inside the castle you’ll find several museums and collections, including ancient sculptures, decorative arts, Renaissance paintings, musical instruments, and archaeological artifacts. One of the most famous spaces is the Sala delle Asse, decorated by Leonardo da Vinci, although it is currently under restoration and expected to reopen in Spring 2027, so unfortunately I wasn’t able to see it during my visit. The courtyards are impressive in size and design, and on a nice day they are perfect for strolling, photography, and relaxing before or after exploring the museum halls. Even walking through the outer parts of the castle gives you a strong sense of its former power and grandeur.

Why You Should Visit Milan’s Sforza Castle

Sforza Castle offers a deep dive into the city’s political, artistic, and architectural history, all in one location. Even though it was raining during my visit and we couldn’t fully enjoy the courtyards, the experience was still engaging and memorable. The castle’s atmosphere, combined with its proximity to Parco Sempione, makes it a perfect place to slow down and connect with Milan’s cultural heritage while enjoying one of the most iconic sites in the city.

Interactivity and Guides

The museums inside the castle are well organized and easy to navigate, with clear signage and thematic rooms that guide you through different historical periods and artistic styles. There are information panels and maps that help you understand where you are within this vast complex, making it suitable even for first-time visitors. In each room, you will find written guides that help you connect more deeply with the history and context. The castle offers an audio guide in multiple languages that you can purchase at the museum bookshop for an additional fee when you enter. While Sforza Castle is not a highly interactive museum in a modern digital sense, its scale, variety of collections, and open spaces make it an engaging and rewarding experience, whether you are a history lover, an art enthusiast, or simply a curious traveler exploring Milan.

Before or after your visit you can enjoy virtual tour Home – Sforza Castle – Municipality of Milan.
